Class trips at King Christian School

Class trips enhance classroom learning by providing students with opportunities to experience curriculum content in a meaningful context.

Trips are chosen to relate to curriculum, community building, or Christian service. In order to respect a parent's right to choose whether or not their child(ren) will participate in class trips, a consent form must be signed at the beginning of each school year and sent in to the school office. The student costs of trips are covered with tuition, but for overnight trips, parents are asked for additional funds to cover the cost of the trip.

Our class trips are categorized into 3 categories:

Category 1: Walking Trip

This may include walking to a farm down the street to support a farming communities unit. Chaperones may not be required.

Category 2: Day Trip

This may include a trip to the Royal Ontario Museum to support a unit on Ancient Egypt or a short trip to a seniors’ home to sing for the residents. Chaperones are required for the day.

Category 3: Overnight Trip

This includes the Grade 5 trip to Fair Glen, the Grade 7 trip to Sainte Marie Among the Hurons, the Grade 8 Outreach Project and the Grade 8 trip to Ottawa and Montreal. Sometimes an additional waiver form may have to be signed for an overnight trip. Chaperones are required for overnight trips.

Chaperones and volunteer drivers

As stewards of the lives entrusted to us, we seek to prioritize safety, without unnecessarily restricting the teachers and students. Students are transported either by volunteer drivers or by bus. Volunteer drivers must be responsible people whose vehicles are in good repair, who have appropriate vehicle and liability insurance, and who commit to safe driving practices. In order to ensure that students are safe, volunteer drivers must sign the Class Trip Volunteer Driver form, which outlines expectations of drivers. When buses are used for class trips, the drivers are bonded and insured by the bus company. It is essential that teachers are supported on class trips by chaperones. Teachers will ask for chaperones well in advance of each trip in order for arrangements to be made. It is important to note that the Class Trip Policy states that chaperones may not provide snacks for the child(ren), may not make any unplanned stops along the way (except in an emergency) and smoking, drinking of alcohol or illegal drugs is not permitted on any part of the class trip.

The teacher / chaperone supervision ratio for class trips is:

  • Kindergarten: 1 to 4
  • Grades 1-3: 1 to 5
  • Grades 4-6: 1 to 10
  • Grades 7-8: 1 to 15
